About the Release
To create Whip Out the Paints and Get To It, Rebecca Rose conducted in-depth research at the Norman Rockwell Museum, spending several days on-site to privately explore Rockwell’s original studio, artifacts, and archival materials.
She captured over 1,300 photographs of the studio’s objects—from paintbrushes to handwritten notes—to reconstruct the space as a digital sculpture with striking accuracy. Drawing from more than 10,000 archival photographs, Rose selected and collaged images of the local friends and neighbors Rockwell famously used as models, positioning them exactly as he originally directed.
The final work honors both Rockwell’s process and the community that shaped his paintings, depicting multiple versions of the artist at work and spotlighting key objects, such as Linda’s iconic dress from The Problem We All Live With.
The title, drawn from a quote by Rockwell himself, reflects the urgency and spirit he brought to his later years, and the vibrant, collaborative energy that defined his practice.
“The title “Whip Out the Paints and Get To It” comes from a Rockwell quote about feeling a renewed urgency in his later years. I wanted to reflect his tireless creativity and drive by showing multiple Normans working simultaneously in his studio.”
