CityKids Speak on Liberty

For the first time, Keith Haring and CityKids’ monumental CityKids Speak on Liberty is presented as a strictly limited fine art print collection.

Created with 1,000 young people in 1986, the 90-foot work was conceived around participation, expression, and the belief that art could have a lasting effect. Forty years later, its story continues.

A MESSAGE FROM A GENERATION

In 1986, the year he opened the Pop Shop and painted Crack Is Wack, Keith Haring collaborated with The CityKids Foundation and 1,000 young New Yorkers to create CityKids Speak on Liberty for the Statue of Liberty’s centennial.

Across a banner measuring 90 × 30 feet, Haring’s drawing became a framework for young people to express, in their own words and images, what freedom meant to them. The collaboration extended his commitment to bringing art into public life, with young people helping to shape both the work’s imagery and its message.

Haring hoped the work would travel and “have some kind of lasting effect.”

Forty years later, this collection of fine art prints brings the banner and its individual details into closer view, inviting a new audience to encounter the voices within it.

Look closely at We The People I and you’ll find Haring’s “KH86” signature in the lower right, reproduced from the original 1986 artwork.
