“I give just enough information for the viewer to fill in the scene in their mind. It feels like a personal invitation to visit the city through an abstract lens.”

CITIES // PARIS

Created exclusively for Art Basel Paris 2026, Cities // Paris represents the latest chapter in Efdot’s decade-long exploration of cities, perception, and memory.

Efdot’s practice investigates how urban environments can be interpreted through drawing, abstraction, and an evolving visual language of lines, dots, colors, and symbols. Building upon his earlier Cities projects, including his generative collaboration with 0xDiid, the collection brings that exploration into sharper focus through fifteen distinct perspectives on Paris.

Rather than documenting the city as it appears, Efdot reduces complex environments to their essential forms. Through carefully considered arrangements of line, color, and negative space, recognizable places emerge from remarkably few marks. What he chooses to leave out becomes as meaningful as what remains, inviting viewers to complete each composition through their own memories and experiences.

At the center of the collection are two unique Master Compositions: Flowing Through Paris (Day), an original acrylic painting on wood panel, and Flowing Through Paris (Night), its animated digital counterpart. Together, they explore how the same artistic language can move between physical and digital mediums, offering two distinct interpretations of the city.

Presented by ICONIC in collaboration with Art Basel Paris, Cities // Paris extends beyond the representation of a particular place. It invites us to reconsider how the environments we inhabit become part of our memories, and how an artist can communicate the experience of an entire city through a remarkably simple visual language.

One City. Two Interpretations.

Flowing Through Paris (Day) and Flowing Through Paris (Night) explore how a single composition can exist across physical and digital mediums. The original painting brings Efdot’s visual language into a physical surface, while its animated counterpart introduces movement and time. Together, they extend his investigation of how we perceive and remember a city.

The Journey

A decade of seeing cities

For more than a decade, Efdot has explored the visual language of urban environments. What began through photography and drawing evolved into increasingly abstract interpretations of cities, eventually extending into generative systems and digital media.

Cities // Paris continues that exploration, shifting the perspective closer to the ground and examining how individual places become recognizable through remarkably few marks.

  1. The beginning

    From above

Aerial photography and drawing. The city read as a plan of streets, blocks and public spaces.

  2. 2022

    Cities

The project begins: urban environments translated into Efdot's language of lines, dots and symbols.

  3. 2025

    Cities, with 0xDiid

A collection of 500 generative artworks created with creative coder 0xDiid, released through Art Blocks Studio.

  4. 2026

    Cities // Paris

For the first time, a full series devoted to a single city, seen from closer to the ground.

Cities // Paris is the newest chapter of my Cities project, which began in 2022. For the first time, I’m focusing an entire series on a single city, exploring Paris through its architecture, movement, and the way we perceive and remember the places around us. I want these works to feel like a personal invitation to experience the city through an abstract lens, almost like a dream you don’t want to wake up from.

My earlier Cities works explored urban environments from above, inspired by aerial photography and the geometry of streets and public spaces. With Paris, the perspective shifts closer to the ground. Each location has its own rhythm and character. In Meeting the Sky, the Eiffel Tower stands surrounded by open space, while Through the Arc brings roads and buildings together around the monument. I want each composition to capture what makes that particular place feel unique.

My process combines intuitive drawing with architectural references, vector graphics, and code. Working in vector allows me to refine colors, line weights, and compositions in ways I couldn’t before. I often begin by adding more detail than necessary, then gradually subtracting until the balance between recognition and abstraction feels right. The collection also brings together traditional and digital techniques through Flowing Through Paris, an original painting, and its animated counterpart, Flowing Through Paris (Night).

Ultimately, I hope people spend enough time with these works to move beyond simply recognizing the landmarks. Up close, unexpected patterns and details begin to emerge, rewarding curiosity and exploration. I’d like people to lose track of time with the work. That feeling where you stop thinking about yourself and feel connected to something larger is one of the biggest reasons why I make art.

ABOUT

Efdot

Portrait of Efdot in his studio

Efdot (Eric Friedensohn, b. 1990) is a Brooklyn-based contemporary artist whose multidisciplinary practice explores visual communication through an evolving language of lines, dots, and symbols. Working across painting, drawing, murals, and digital media, he transforms simple marks into intricate compositions that explore movement, memory, and human connection. Influenced by ancient writing systems, architecture, and urban environments, his work investigates how visual language can communicate meaning beyond words and cultural boundaries.

At the center of his practice is improvisation. Efdot approaches drawing as a form of moving meditation, allowing each mark to inform the next until a composition emerges. Raised in New York, he studied graphic design and product design at Drexel University, graduating in 2012. His experience as an art director for WeWork in Latin America, alongside years of skateboarding and international travel, has shaped his relationship with architecture, movement, and urban environments. His exploration of cities began through aerial photography, gradually evolving into an abstract visual language informed by the patterns and rhythms of urban life.

His digital practice includes Hieroglyphs, Cities, and GLiFS, projects exploring the relationship between hand-drawn symbols, generative systems, and visual communication. In 2025, he collaborated with creative coder 0xDiid on Cities, a collection of 500 generative artworks released through Art Blocks Studio. His work has been presented internationally, and his collaborations include Nike, Apple, Adobe, Sony, Coca-Cola, Golden Goose, the New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, and USA Skateboarding. Selected as one of twenty artists for Topps Project 2020, Efdot continues to expand his distinctive artistic language across physical and digital mediums.
