Some works continue an artist’s language. Others expand its possibilities.
Summer Waves does both.
For more than two decades, A Mashiro has worked with circles, lines, color, Japanese patterns, and the natural world. These elements have become a visual language of their own, shaped across years of physical and digital creation. Traditionally, his patterns remained contained within forms defined by circles and lines.
In Summer Waves, something changed.
While searching for what the composition still needed, A Mashiro allowed the wave pattern to escape those boundaries and move across the entire image. What began as an experiment unexpectedly transformed the work. The composition no longer contained pattern. It moved through it.
The discovery did not replace A Mashiro’s existing language. It expanded it. As he describes it, allowing pattern to move freely across the image has given him “one more possibility” to carry into whatever comes next.
Summer Waves captures that moment of discovery: familiar elements rearranged until they reveal somewhere the artist had not been before.

SUMMER WAVES
I grew up near the sea. The view of the water, the smell of the tide. I still love them, and I have been painting the seasons for a long time now; Summer Waves continues that line of work.
While I was working on it, the paintings of David Hockney were somewhere in the back of my mind. Nothing of his appears in the piece directly, but I wanted to make a painting with that kind of bright atmosphere.
I have painted circles and Japanese patterns many times. This time, though, instead of only enclosing the pattern within lines, I set the wave motif boldly across the whole picture. Doing so let me express a brightness that isn't confined by a frame — and it also feels like I found a new world of my own.

A-MASHIRO
A Mashiro makes geometric abstractions that hold order and chaos in the same frame. Circles, lines, and squares settle over flowing, ink bled grounds, each element placed, in his words, “as if they were there originally.”
Raised on Japan’s coast in a family home more than 150 years old, he grew up surrounded by traditional patterns, nature, and the quiet logic of functional beauty. More than two decades of oil and acrylic painting followed, shaped as much by Western approaches to color and composition as by the Japanese visual traditions he inherited. In 2021, he carried that painter’s hand into digital media, where the underlying discipline remains unchanged: every work is a search for balance, built stroke by stroke.
For A Mashiro, creating is a way of steadying the mind, his own first, then the viewer’s. That pursuit has taken his work to exhibitions in Tokyo, Seattle, New York, Miami, and across Europe, as well as projects with Bright Moments in Tokyo and Miami and work on SuperRare. He is equally committed as a collector and curator, introducing international artists to Japan while helping connect Japanese artists with the wider world. He lives and works in Tokyo.
Digital+Physical
Summer Waves exists first as a digital painting. Its physical edition is not intended simply to reproduce it.
For the 24 × 36 inch print, A-Mashiro worked with 360ºGRAPHICS, a Tokyo printmaking studio founded in 1982. The underlying image is printed in giclée; the wave pattern is then laid over it in silver silkscreen, a second pass of ink that catches and shifts with the light, giving the surface a physical character a screen cannot hold.
The result is a different encounter with the same work: one transmitted through light, the other through ink, surface, and scale.
The edition is limited to 25. Each $750 acquisition includes the digital artwork and its matching museum-quality print, hand signed and numbered by A-Mashiro. One work, two encounters.

Summer Waves is a digital artwork by Tokyo based artist A Mashiro, released as an edition of 25 on Ethereum.
This piece marks an evolution in A-Mashiro’s visual language. Patterns that were previously contained within individual forms are released across the entire composition, while brightness becomes an explicit artistic aim. Together, these changes create a greater sense of openness, movement, and spatial freedom within the work.

Summer Waves was digitally painted entirely by hand. A-Mashiro developed the linework using a Wacom pen display and Clip Studio Paint before working extensively with color, pattern, and texture in Photoshop. The process included repeated color adjustments, detailed pattern editing, and close inspection of individual lines and forms.

The physical edition is a 24 × 36-inch print combining giclée printing with silkscreened silver elements. The additional silkscreen process introduces a reflective material quality that cannot be reproduced through giclée printing alone.

The physical edition begins with the same composition as the digital artwork but is conceived as a distinct physical expression of the work. The silkscreened silver introduces reflectivity, texture, and a changing relationship with light that exists only in the physical edition.

The physical edition is produced by 360°GRAPHICS in Tokyo. A printmaking studio founded in 1982 with more than four decades of experience across silkscreen and giclée.
For A Mashiro, the collaboration was as much artistic as technical: the studio approached the physical edition as an artwork in its own right rather than simply reproducing a digital file. -
Each edition is $750 USD. The $750 purchase includes both the digital artwork and one museum quality, hand signed and numbered physical print. There is no additional cost for the physical edition.
