In 1986, Keith Haring joined forces with 1,000 young people from CityKids to create Speak on Liberty—a monumental 90-foot by 30-foot banner centered on freedom, community, and the power of young people to make their voices heard. Created collectively by hand, the work brought Haring’s unmistakable visual language together with the energy, ideas, and expression of an entire generation.
At an extraordinary scale, Speak on Liberty was never meant to be experienced quietly. It was created to be seen, to start conversations, and to give young people a platform to speak about the world they wanted to inherit. Every figure, line, and mark became part of something larger—a single work created through the contributions of a thousand individual voices.
Nearly four decades later, that message remains remarkably relevant. Speak on Liberty is more than an important work of art; it is a record of what can happen when creativity becomes a shared language and young people are given the opportunity to be heard.
