CityKids Speak on Liberty

In 1986, Keith Haring and 1,000 young New Yorkers created a monumental 90-foot banner for the Statue of Liberty’s centennial. Forty years later, this historic collaboration returns as a limited-edition print collection.

THE HISTORIC WORK

A message from a generation

Created collectively by hand, CityKids Speak on Liberty brought Keith Haring’s unmistakable line together with the drawings, names, and messages of 1,000 young New Yorkers.

For Haring, participation was fundamental to the idea. He envisioned a work monumental enough for him to contribute while making room for a thousand others to leave their own mark. The result was something larger than the work of a single artist: a collective expression of freedom, community, and a generation finding its voice.

Haring hoped the work would travel and “have some kind of lasting effect.”

Forty years later, it has.
